Question by *~*Angel*Eyes*~*: What causes sharp pain, left side under rib cage?
I have this sharp pain, that gets worse with breathing, moving and standing. It’s under my rib cage, left side more towards the back then the front. Anyone have any idea what could cause this?

Back pain under the left rib cage is a dilemma for all patients suffering from it. Any constant pain is viewed by doctors as a very serious disorder or disease and requires immediate attention and cure. The rib cage is a formation that is composed by the thoracic vertebrae and ribs, sternum-breastbone, and the coastal cartilages that links the ribs to the sternum. The term cage is defined as a structure to house animals. The rib cage is a similar structure which houses and also protects the animal heart and lungs, also known as a thoracic cage in medical terms.
In the chest-thorax region, nerves spring out from the spine and divide into two parts. The first part goes to just under the skin and further sends fibers to the surface and also travels around half way around the chest. This is a probable reason for the feeling of pain in the back to the side of the chest. The second part travels to the bottom of the rib around the sternum bone, and also surfaces to the skin and then goes back towards the side on the same level as the first nerve. Rib cage pain can be any pain or discomfort in the area of the ribs.
A fractured or cracked rib can cause rib cage pain, costochondritis, inflammation of the cartilage near the breastbone, osteoporosis and pleurisy. If you do encounter such ribcage you must first get the area x-rayed so as to determine if your ribs are fractured. In the event of a fractured rib an immediate surgery should be scheduled. If you’ve been suffering this pain for a long period of time (3 months or more) it’s necessary to go for an MRI or CT scan and consult a professional to check for nerve damage, tumor or cancer.
Pain due to inflammation of cartilage between ribs and breastbone can radiate around the back and down the arms. Such type of pain could be enormous enough to give you a syndrome that you are having a heart attack or lung problems. Though this condition is benign but it is very painful and uncomfortable during the period it lasts.
There are instances when constant back pain under left rib cage makes you visit a specialist in gastroenterology since the problem starts with your stomach. Your stomach feels empty and you feel that a big growl wants to come out, nothing that you end to eat makes it better, you often get heart burn and a pain in the left side underneath rib cage. Routine blood pathology should be conducted to eliminate any infection of the intestine or pancreas. Digestive, gastro and bowel disorders must be ruled out by seeking medical advice. Such symptoms might make you start wondering that it is due to twisted bowel, you might have to go for a check up of colon.
Constant pain under the left rib cage is very uncomfortable for pregnant women especially those in advanced stages of pregnancy. They experience extreme pain near the area where the ribcage and breast meet. The pain causes extreme trauma and sometimes makes it difficult to sleep.

Hello,
Three months ago I had pain under my left chest. Just recently the pain got more extreme, and now it feels like i have air under my chest, when the pain comes, my left arm feels tingly like its not getting enough blood. Also when this happens I get panic atacks and I get light headed. Then under my left chest I will hear and feel some bubbling and then the tingling stops and i feel a huge relief. It usually comes in the evening time and lasts for an hour or so.
I went to the Doctor and had tests done on my heart, lungs, kidneys and the doctors said that everything was ok. This was about 3 days ago and im still having things symptoms im just wondering if you have any takes on this.
Thank You
Mo

I get the EXACT same thing, I have rushed to hospital many times because of this, but it is always the same answer, “Everything seems to be ok”, only thing is I know its not ok, no one knows my body like I do, and I know SOMETHING is not right, I just wish someone could help, I’ve had this for like 6months now, it first started with the arm tingling, but now it is around my chest, rib cage and back. Its very uncomfortable and also attacks me just a night, or I stop being active. Anyone have any idea what this could be?
Thanks
Anna

I have had this pain either on or under my lower left back rib. It is a sharp pain on the last inch or so to the outer part of when I press firmly on it, but when I press lightly on it there is no pain. I’ve had it for about 3 weeks now. After sitting for a couple hours (I drive a bus) it seems to start giving me a bit more pain and then when I walk around for a few minutes it gets better, but still there and still hurts when I press firmly on it. What could it be and how could I get rid of it? Thx

I started having (about 3 days ago) getting a pain under my left rib cage and sometimes it continues around my right breast rib cage. It usually starts about 6:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. and I swear it feels like I am having a heart attack. Once I sit down and eat something it abates as long as I am sitting down. I do retail and am always bending and reaching and I am wondering if this could have anything to do with my job. Usually after I shower and relax it goes away. Hence no heart attack. It is really annoying and don’t even have any idea what to take for it.
Please help.

I’m not positive, but I do know that the lower back are your kidneys.
It could be a stone of some kind…or your apendix..it can be anything, really.
Seeing a doctor is the bestbet. Don’t rely on yahooanswers. Get professional help, a.s.a.p if it doesn’t stop.

It’s also possible that it’s is a rib out of place. I get this often. If you visit a doctor they will run a ton of expensive tests for no reason (trust me, I know… I’m a nurse). Try going to a chiropractor, they could help.

I’ve had this before and I honestly have no idea what could have caused it. After a while it should get better if it’s the same thing I was going through. It hurts when you breathe in or talk loudly or cough, right? I hope you feel better soon.

In between the bones of your ribcage are small connector muscles called interstitial muscles. Sometimes these may become agitated due to lack of movement/exercise or become strained due to overexertion or hyper extension. It is really nothing to worry about if it happens once in a while. If it lasts for over 24 hours however, or becomes worse, consult a physician.

It could be your gallbladder. I’ve had mine removed, but it was definitely sharp pains and definitely unpleasant. Although it could be gas, I’m sure you would know if you were just having gas. Grease and greasy foods can increase the pain in having gall stones, which is what makes it necessary to get gallbladders removed.
Best of luck, I hope it’s nothing serious!

I doubt you’ve broken/fractured a rib because I’m guessing you’d remember doing that…
You do have a vital little organ under your left rib cage, it’s your pancreas and I became very familiar with mine after an onset of severe pain and other complications. It took a little while for doctors to suss out what it was (cause mine were shit) but after a scan of my gall bladder – ruling out gal stones, I was eventually diagnosed with Pancreatitis (basically inflammation of the pancreas) and you can have major problems if your pancreas becomes too damaged because it is unable to repair itself. I am no longer able to drink alcohol or have caffeinated drinks because of it.
Check out this website and see if you have any other similar symptoms:
http://www.mydr.com.au/pain/pancreatitis-all-you-need-to-know
And I’d definitely go to the doctors too.
All the best
