Question by Jess: Delayed Menstruation + Abdominal Pain?
I’ve been having pain in the left side of my lower abdomin for over three months. At first I thought it was an ovarian cyst, like I had once before. When I went to my gynocologist she performed an ultrasound revieling nothing abnormal. It was suggested that muscles in my lower back were the ultimate cause and I was given exercises.
Since then I continue to have pain in my lower abdomin (especially when going to the bathroom, walking, and bending over at the waist) that has progressed from the left side to the center.
The pain became more severe the closer I got to the time I should be menstruating. It was so severe I couldn’t sleep one night. Now the pain has eased ever so slightly, but my period is over a week late.
I am not, nor have I ever been, sexually active.
I also have chronic migraines which inhibit my ability to take many medications for pain (trying to avoid rebound headache).
I’ve been getting more concerned the longer this has been going on. Please help ![]()
I was on birth control pills for many years but they exacerbated my migraines to the point where they were incapacitating. Then I tried the Depo shot and had very strange side effects.
I’ve read about endometriosis as well. I was really hoping that would not be the case . . . I’ll do more research. I’m glad to hear that being this late is somewhat normal. The pain coupled with this late period were concerning me. I thought endometriosis symptoms were excessively heavy periods and spotting. I’m not bleeding at all.
I feel like whenever I go to my doctors that they dismiss whatever I say. I hate going to doctors now because they make me feel like nothing’s wrong and I’m wasting their time.

First of all, forget the exercises…if you or your physician can’t pin point what the problem is, then you shouldn’t have been given exercises to do…this may worsen your problem. As far as late menstruation, it happens to most women…are you under any stress, sickness, etc…Many things could cause it to be late. Okay, this is going to sound strange, but my doctor prescribed me with birth control pills to regulate my cycle…considering my tubes are tied and I can’t have children that seemed odd to me, but it works! As far as the abdominal pain…have you pulled any muscles straining too hard? When I was younger I had abdominal pain that ended up being my appendix. You seem very concerned and my biggest suggestion would be to see another doctor and get a second opinion. Good Luck!

SYMPTOMS OF PAINFUL MENSTRUATION
The pain may commence just before menstruation and subside after the periods. In extreme cases, the pain may linger on till the end of menstruation.
One can experience insomnia or disturbed sleep;
The patient can also have constipation, appetite loss, vomiting and even nausea.
ORGANIC DEFECTS & SURGERY
At times, painful menstruation can also be the result of defects in the respective organs of the patient. If such defects are diagnosed in the female genital tract, generally surgery is deemed to be the best means to rectify the flaw.
DIETARY REGIMEN
The patient should regularly have the following vegetables: Garlic, cucumber, bitter gourd, gourd, drumstick, surana, papaya, and the white variety of pumpkin.
WHAT NOT TO EAT
Avoid taking items that cause constipation;
Don’t take brinjal, yellow pumpkin, potato, and colocasia;
Stay away from food items;
Similarly, don’t have sour food items;
Pulses should not be consumed by such persons.
ASAFOETIDA: BENEFICIAL FOR SUCH PATIENTS
The patient should adequate quantity of asafoetida. It can be added to the meals prepared for the person concerned.
Asafoetida can also be given in a powdery form to the person.
First, fry a table spoonful of asafoetida with butter or ghee over fire. This makes asafoetida brittle. Then grind it into the powdery state.
The dose: One teaspoonful twice daily while taking meals or as an ingredient of the prepared meals. However, ensure that the patient follows it up with at least two average glasses of water.
Many prefer to have asafoetida mixed with vegetables, bread, rice or butter-milk to arrest the pungent smell of asafoetida.
GARLIC: IDEAL FOR WOMEN
The women must inevitably consume at least 10 garlic cloves twice daily. They can be taken raw along with meals or cut into pieces and mixed with vegetables and salads.
Controlling the pungent smell: To arrest the pungent smell of garlic, the cloves (either the cut pieces or the whole ones) can be fried (after the outer coatings are removed) in a bit of lime juice or butter-milk. And, if the patient needs even more odourless garlic, then fry the garlic in butter.

OTHER IMPORTANT POINTS
Women in menstruation should not sleep during the daytime. But, it is mandatory that during the periods, the women take complete rest.
Such people should be able to spend their time fruitfully with their friends or with people having the same mental wavelength;
It is important that such patients are treated psychologically;
Sedentary habits must be shed;
People having painful menstruation must undertake leisure walking for at least five kilometres every day.
Stout persons are also prone to this condition. Hence they should always try to shed the extra weight or the flab.
Flab or fat can be reduced by daily exercise. These exercises must include the ones that concentrate on the waist portion. They must also do contraction of the pelvic region regularly.
AYURVEDIC EXPLANATION
In Ayurvedic terminology, this condition is known as Rajah-kricchra. Painful menstruation occurs due to the predominance of the four Doshas – Kapha, Pitta and Vayu.
The lower pelvis is the seat of Apana Vayu which is primarily responsible for the menstrual cycle in both the sexes. Apana Vayu manages the regular purgation of sperm (males) and the menstrual blood as well as ovum (females), besides stool, and urine.
Impairment of the Apana Vayu leads to painful menstruation. It happens when Apana Vayu instead of coursing along its natural downward flow flows upwards due to various factors. The prominent among these factors are constipation and hormonal imbalance.
AYURVEDIC TREATMENTS
The Ayurvedic treatment and the medicines are effective only if the pain experienced by the patient during menstruation is due to functional factors. As mentioned above, organic defects are best dealt with by surgeries.
The Ayurvedic medication in such conditions is Kumari. It is purgative by nature. It is prescribed for especially those patients who do not have the regular habit of moving the bowels or are suffering from constipation. Such irregular habits are also responsible for painful menstruation. Hence there is the need for this purgative treatment – Kumari.
KUMARI
Kumari is a plant. This plant grows naturally and luxuriantly all over India. Its natural habitats are rocky places and deserts.
Preparation Process : The juice of the Kumari plant is actually needed for the treatment. The juice is extracted from the pulp of Kumari plant. The patient needs to consume this juice.
Patient’s Dosage : Kumari should be taken by the patient at least two days prior to the slated date of menstruation commencement.
THE COMPOUND PREPARATIONS
Kumari is the main ingredient of the compound medications needed for treating this condition. However in such cases, the dehydrated sediments of the juice are utilised for preparing the compound medications like Rajah Pravartani and Kumari Asava.
RAJAH PRAVARTANI
Rajah Pravartani is an effective drug for the patients suffering from painful menstruation. Rajah Pravartani comes in the pill form.
It is made up of Kumari and borax which is used in its Bhasma (dust) form and asafoetida.
Dose : A single dosage consists of two tablets twice daily for a week immediately before the slated date of menstruation commencement.
Effects: The patient experiences no pain during menstruation; It works as a laxative; The congestion in the pelvic region.
KUMARI ASAVA
Kumari Asavais prepared with alcohol as one of the main ingredients.
Dose: A single dosage consists of six teaspoonfuls of Kumari mixed with an equal quantity of water. The patient should have the medicine twice daily after food.

Back pain often leaves people bed-ridden for weeks. Without movement, sufferers turn to their beds for comfort. Unfortunately hard, unrelenting mattresses don’t help. Neither do the pillows that most people keep in their homes. Either too soft, too firm, or not supportive, the pillows provide little relief. When needing bedside relief for lower back pain, sufferers should turn to pillows for lower back pain. Specially-designed pillows provide ample relief for the most common pains.
Pillows for lower back pain come in many shapes, sizes and prices. Each user must look at their specific pain and be open to different styles. Different designs deliver different relief and comfort for lower back pain. The premier pillow for lower back pain is a lumbar pillow. Most commonly seen in a wedge-shaped design, the pillow rests under the lower back. In that position, the pillow supports the lower back, reducing strain and the load on the injured back.
Though it may seem out of the ordinary, leg pillows can also help lower back pain. The pillows elevate the legs, ankles and feet. The position stretches the back slightly and loosens any tightness that occurs when the lower back’s muscles are compressed.
For the above reasons, this position is actually considered the most relieving position for back pain. Lying on the floor with a pillow elevating and bending the knees and feet on a chair takes strain from the back to support the body. The position removes weight off the back which is often a considerable source of strain.
With a pillow for lower back pain, the relief doesn’t come suddenly or immediately. The pain often develops over time and the same can be said for relief. For low to mild lower back pain, a day or two of pillow rest can be required. More severe back pain can take longer, even weeks. The same positions should be observed while sleeping and resting on a daily basis until pain subsides.
Time is the best cure for many reasons. Back pain is often associated with physical and mental stress. A break or time away from the stress can be the best medicine. With that said, too much rest can be detrimental. Muscle atrophy is a real threat when muscles go unused for a length of time. The muscles weaken and can in turn lengthen recovery time. For that reason, people should be moving, but not necessarily active during pillow-based recovery.
When making the choice to buy a pillow for lower back pain, visit physical health shops, bedding stores and try a few online sites for a variety of solutions. Since back pain is a physical comfort issue and relies on personal comfort levels, pillows should be carefully researched before purchase. Back pain pillows can provide exceptional relief to chronic sufferers at an affordable price and offer the convenience of not requiring surgery. Remember, if the pillow doesn’t help, please consult a physician for chronic back pain especially if the pain worsens.

Understanding Cancer Pain

Cancer pain comes with the territory when you’re a cancer patient. For those who have advances stages of cancer or cancer that has spread through the body, cancer pain is inevitable. The thing about cancer pain is that it comes in waves and differing degrees. One day the pain might be nearly non-existent and you can go about your life as normal as possible, while the very next day could be excruciating. The first step is to understand the pain.
Understanding Cancer Pain
Cancer pain can be caused by many things; the cancer itself releasing chemicals into the body, the tumor pressuring the nerves, bones or other organs, or the cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. According to the Mayo Clinic, chemotherapy can cause many potentially painful side effects, including mouth sores, diarrhea and nerve damage. Radiation can leave behind a burning sensation or painful scars, and surgery recovery can be incredibly painful.
Tumors can also press on the spinal cord, creating a great deal of pain in the back and neck. These kinds of tumors create spinal cord compression, which ultimately can mean weakness in the entire body and pain in the arms and legs. Worst case scenarios of spinal cord compression can mean a loss of bladder or bowel control and paralysis.
Phantom pain is the toughest pain to control because it occurs after an arm, leg or breast has been removed. After the surgery to remove the cancer, many recovering patients will still feel pain or other unusual feelings that “seem to be coming from the absent (phantom) body part. Doctors are not sure why this happens, but phantom pain is real; it is not ‘all in your head,’” according to Cancer.org.
Persistent and Breakthrough Pain
When it comes to cancer pain management, there are two forms of pain that every cancer patient lives with; persistent pain and breakthrough pain. Persistent pain is just that; pain that is continuous and is controlled by regular pain treatment and visits to the cancer pain doctor. Breakthrough pain is those moments of extreme pain that ‘breakthrough’ no matter what type of treatment method you are undergoing. Breakthrough pain is unpredictable, sharp and quick, can last as long as an hour, and is incredibly intense.
Breakthrough pain is another fact of life for cancer patients. Even while your cancer pain management might be working wonderfully, breakthrough pain can strike without warning and take you out of life for the rest of the day. Occurrences of breakthrough pain do not necessarily mean your cancer pain treatment isn’t working, because many times this form of pain can ‘breakthrough’ all forms of effective treatment. However, if you are experiencing greater occurrences of breakthrough pain, consult your cancer pain doctor about other treatment methods.

I have an intense pain in my lower back just about every morning. It seems to lessen after I poop and then fades throughout the day. What could be causing this?

i bet it’s your mattress. it probably is too soft. i have a “firm” mattress, with a pillow top. the pillow top is soft enough to make the firm mattress worthless, and by back hurts every morning. when you poop you may lean forward a bit, stretching your back muscles. that helps relieve the pain, and the pain subsides as the day goes by.

How to Prevent Low Back Pain

Ninety percent of the population will experience low back pain at some point in their lives. The majority of these people will have a recurrence of low back pain as well. It has been shown that those people that are given the proper education regarding their low back pain can significantly reduce their chances of having another episode of pain.
If you are one of the many individuals that have experienced an episode of low back pain in the past and would like to prevent a recurrence of these symptoms here are some simple things you can do:
1. MOVE! Our spines were meant to move. Any static position for too long a time can prove to be uncomfortable, even painful for most people. You should move your spine frequently whether you are standing, lying down, or sitting. The longer you are in any one position the greater the stresses and force that load our spinal ligaments and disc structures become. Frequent movement can help reduce these stresses and minimize low back pain.
2. AVOID sitting longer than 30 minutes at a time. This is probably one of the hardest things for people to do but it can be very helpful in preventing recurrence of low back pain. Everyone should get up, move around or even stand within every 30 minutes of sitting. The sitting position greatly increases the pressure within our spinal discs while standing can relieve this pressure, even if it is for a short time. If you have a desk job get up and walk around your desk once or twice. You’ll be amazed at the difference in how your back feels.

3. Try not to sit or repeatedly bend forward first thing in the morning. Our spinal discs collect fluid and swell while we sleep. For people with low back pain or a history of back pain this swelling can make it difficult and often painful to bend forward or sit in the morning. It is better to spend more time standing and walking during the first few hours upon waking to allow that swelling to go down. This will make sitting and forward bending more tolerable.
4. If you are involved in activities or an occupation that requires repetitive bending and lifting it is important to counter that forward bending motion with an opposite motion – backward bending. This is accomplished by placing your hands on your hips or in the small of your back and bending backward at the waist. Bend backwards within your tolerance without letting your knees bend then return to the upright position. If this movement causes you increased pain then don’t bend back as far.
5. If you consistently wake in the morning with a stiff or achy back then try lying on your stomach for 3 to 5 minutes before getting out of bed. This may be uncomfortable at first but may feel better with time. If your pain worsens in this position then it is time to move.
6. POSTURE CHECK! We should all be aware of our postural positions throughout the day. This includes standing, walking, sitting, dynamic postures (i.e. bending) and lying down. Be aware of the position of your low back and what position feels best for you. The old school of thought was that we all had to sit and stand soldier straight at all times. This does not hold true for everyone. Erect postures can sometimes be painful for people depending on the condition that they have. In order to avoid lower back pain some people need to keep their backs slightly flexed (or flattened). Try to maintain the spinal position that is most comfortable for you keeping in mind that frequent movement is still important to prevent low back pain.
7. TIGHTEN YOUR ABS! This simple activity can work wonders in preventing a recurrence of low back pain. Imagine a line going from your belly button to the base of your neck. Now use your stomach muscles to pull your stomach along that imaginary line. This is a gentle contraction and you should not use a lot of force to make this happen. DO NOT hold your breath or “suck in your gut.” You are simply tightening your abdominal muscles so that it feels like your stomach is drawing in. If this movement is too difficult then try making an “S” sound (like a snake). Making this sound will automatically contract the desired muscles and cause your stomach to draw in.
These are some very simple things we can all do on a daily basis to help prevent a recurrence or an onset of low back pain. Remember – not all of these activities will apply to all people at all times. If you experience any undue pain with the performance of these suggestions then stop immediately. Consult your physician or a licensed physical therapist for further advice.

Hey everyone..
I just moved to NYC by myself..yesterday night I was trying to pick up my really really heavy suitcase and I made a wrong move in the wrong direction which caused pain immediately..it’s like my back is blocked on an entire side?
It really hurts I tried to sleep last night but it hurts to lay and it hurts to sit and it hurts to move it on the one side or basically almost any move hurts,but when I stay still standing I almost don’t feel anything but I can hardly walk.
I’m not sure what to do? Do I have to go and see a chiropractor right away? Is it a chiropracor that I need or what kind of doctor is it? An osteopath? …I checked chiropractors and they’re closed the weekend do I have to wait until monday or would this be inconvenient?
..Do I have to go to the pharmacy and buy some kind of cream?? Or will it simply go away after a while?

Sounds like you herniated a disc. I’ve referred many patients to these chiropractors with great success, I recommend you give them a try. In the mean time, put ice on the area of pain for 20 mins on and 40 mins off, repeat as necessary to control the pain.

There are so many people that have had to live with back pains, all of whom have testified that the feeling of living with the pain thereof is not one of pleasure. There are various common causes of back pains known to man, yet one of the most common one is disc bulging. This can cause a lot of frustration to anyone whom it affects, and it will take the patient a lot of time and patience for the process of full recovery to be done. Though surgery is a quick way in which the disc can be returned to its original position, the risks involved are present. The patient will therefore shy away from this method, and will generally take a pain relieving option than go for the full surgery required. The lower back is one of the most common areas in which the bulging occurs in many patients. What then is being talked about when one mentions a disc bulge?
The vertebra in our spine consists of small bones joined up together. One vertebra is separated from another by a disc. The disc that is in question has a layer of several tissues that are usually rapped around it. Do not assume the importance of the disc. It is this disc that gives someone the necessary support while standing upright. The connective tissues talked about around the disc surround from outside a jelly like substance, known to the medical world as the nucleus pulposus. It is this substance that bulges out, whenever some form of incidence occurs. Such incidences as accidence, immediate or even repetitive strenuous activity may cause this substance to break through the surrounding tissue, causing bulging to occur.
Outside the tissue area are the nerves that constitute the central nervous system of the body. When the bulging presses against them, interrupting their activity, the pain is felt. Sometimes the bulge will not press against the nerves that are near them. When this happens, the nerve will not cause any pain for a long time. Only when the nerve gets into contact with the bulge will the pain begin.
Symptoms of a disc bulge will include vary. As stated earlier, the back will not experience pain for a long time, even if the rupture has occurred. One of the reasons why it is hard to notice the pain is because there is a tendency for the nerves to radiate the pain in some other part of the body. Some will feel pain emerging from areas as low as the legs. Nevertheless, the most common areas to feel the pain are the thighs, the bum or even the foot. One will commonly feel some kind of needle like pain and will also feel some muscle weaknesses.

There are non-surgical cure for lower back pain. Follow these tips and relieve you from the debilitating pain in the back.
Exercise – exercise may get rid of lower back pain easily. This technique is effective if done properly. There are many methods of exercise to help lessen back pain. Try some of these steps:
• Pelvic tilt exercise
• Knee to chest exercise
• Lumbar spine exercise
• Lumbar extension
• Lower back rotation
These are just some exercise techniques to cure for lower back pain. There are also gadgets or equipments to use in exercising.
Heating or ice pad – Heat pads and ice packs are effective home remedy for lower back pain. Place the heat pad or ice pack in the affected area and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes.
Posture – Proper posture must also be attained to cure temporary pain in the back. You can use comfortable pillows placed on your back while sitting during office work. Proper standing position is also a must to align your spinal structure.
Medicine – There are certain medications that can be bought over the counter. It is quite effective when taken during the onset of lower back pain. Here are some medications for back pain treatment.
• NSAIDs – anti inflammatory drugs
• Acetaminophen – analgesics
• Muscle relaxants
• Pain relievers
Yoga – Yoga is a kind of meditating exercise. This technique is used to flex the muscles including the bones and spine. It is effective in treating back pain because it helps release the stress physically and emotionally.
Pilates – Pilates is a combination of exercise and Yoga. Reliable equipment is used to move the muscles and bones in the body.
Therapeutic massage – Massage is effective in relieving back lower back pain since it helps in relaxing muscle spasms in the back.
Chiropractic therapy – This practice in treating lower back pain utilizes spine manipulation. It is effective but quite expensive.
Water therapy – Spas, whirlpools, therapeutic bath tubs are also effective since water also massages your body and the toxins are also flushed out hence, relieving you from lower back pain.
Herbal medicines – There are herbal medicines that have certain curing properties to heal lower back pain. Make sure it id FDA approved and it is safe to use.
Weight management – It is best to have a healthy diet especially for obese persons. Lose some weight to lessen the strain on the back. Combine exercise and proper diet to lose weight fast and to cure back pain.

You’re getting close to the end and the arrival of your precious bundle when you’re 36 weeks pregnant. If you go right to the end you only have four or five weeks left, but it is likely that you doctor has told you that you could go into labor at any time. You might be feeling a bit overwhelmed at this point and finding it hard to get comfortable when you lie down. You might also be anxious that you don’t have enough things bought for the baby or that the nursery is not exactly in shape.
It is at this time that you start to get a nesting feeling. You want everything to be clean when the baby arrives so you may find yourself cleaning the house or apartment more. This is one way of keeping busy and active. Your belly is very big at this stage, making it difficult for you to sit in a chair or to get up when you want to stand. You probably can’t see your feet when you look down once you are in a standing position. At the same time, you will probably be a bit uncomfortable due to the itchiness of the stretch marks on your abdomen. The best thing to do about this is to apply lots of lotion on your stomach to help relieve the itchy feeling.
The baby probably weighs about 6 pounds by now and is about 13 inches long. At this time, the baby will start to move down into the birthing position. You may notice, or someone may tell you, that your stomach ahs dropped. This is one of the signs tat the birth is very close. You may feel the dropping or you may feel nothing at all. It is also called lightening and once this happens you will feel more comfortable because there will be less pressure on your lungs and ribs. You may also feel urges to eat more and at unusual times.
Other changes that will start to occur at 36 weeks include changes to your bladder. You may have to urinate a lot more often and may not be able to hold the water as you once could. This is because the baby in the lower position is now pressing against the bladder. You can try to cut down on the amount of fluids you drink and lean forward as you urinate to ensure that you do empty the bladder completely.
Some of the other changes could include:
* Constipation
* Hemorrhoids
* Backache
* Pain in the buttocks
* An increased feeling of heaviness
By now, there is no danger to the baby if he/she were to be born at this stage. All the organs have developed and the baby would be able to breathe outside the uterus. Baby fat is developing on the arms and legs and there are dimples on the cheeks, knees and elbows. The sucking movements have developed so that the baby will suck the milk as soon as it is born. The gums have also hardened and the brain is rapidly developing. The baby is also blinking its eyes at this stage.

How Spinal Decompression Gives You Back Your Life Spinal decompression has become a hot topic on the radio, television, and in newspapers. When you hear these ads, you are generally listening to someone promoting the use of a spinal decompression machine recently approved for some uses by the FDA. Remarkable claims about NASA and astronauts fill your ears, but as the commercial passes, you begin to wonder if these claims are valid. The simple answer is yes. The new spinal decompression machines do work on some problems and can be part of a total program towards back health, but they are not the only options for spinal decompression. For people with a bulged or ruptured a disc, daily pain is often part of their existence. It isn’t hard to believe that someone suffering from pain in their back and down his leg is willing to try almost anything for relief. That said, few people really want to consider surgery if at all avoidable. For this group of people, mechanical decompression is an option. There are currently two machines that have been approved by the FDA for use on spinal disc issues, and you can find chiropractors, physical therapist, and back care specialists who use them. These machines provide a computer-controlled program of stretching and releasing for those who use them. The patient is connected to the table by the use of straps across the pelvis and chest. The table is directed to treat a specific area and away it goes. Each treatment takes about 20-30 minutes and is often followed by ice, heat, stretching, or electrical stimulation. A normal course of treatments requires attending several times a week for about six weeks. Since insurance companies don’t cover this therapy, finances can be a major concern. The main question is whether this therapy is better than any other. Unfortunately, there is no definitive answer. Other traction-based techniques like inversion tables or traditional traction do much the same thing; they are just more complicated to apply. They also don’t have the potential advantage of computerization to help pinpoint specific areas of difficulty. Studies are still being conducted as to the efficacy of spinal decompression and so far reviews and results have been somewhat mixed. It really seems to come down to a person-by-person basis. Another method of spinal decompression involves surgery. Since surgery is clearly much more invasive than lying upon a table, it is recommended that you leave it as a final option. In surgical decompression a portion of the inhibiting bone is removed, the exuded disc material is removed and then the back is stitched up. Healing time varies based on the type of surgery performed and the extent of the damage discovered. If you are suffering from disc related back problems and you want to give spinal decompression therapy a try, it may well be worth your time. Find an experienced practitioner who is willing to combine the decompression with other modalities such as chiropractic care or massage, and give it a try. It generally takes several weeks before you feel an effect, so you need to stick with it for a while. If your pain increases, stop immediately and consult your physician. Just like so many other new medical treatments, mechanical decompression will need to be around for a while before anything conclusive can be determined.
